讲座摘要:

In this paper, we investigate the manufacturers’ model choices between selling and PPU models for complementary products. To address this, we consider a market with two strictly complementary products that have same production costs. Our findings reveal that, whether complementary products are offered by an integrated manufacturer or two independent manufacturers, both products are offered as PPU services when the operating cost is low, one is sold and the other is offered as PPU service when the operating cost is at a middle range, and both are sold when the operating cost is high. Notably, compared with the integrated case, complementary products are more likely to be both offered as PPU services in the nonintegrated case. Moreover, we extend the model to setting of complementary products with different production costs. In the integrated case, the manufacturer will not provide both products as PPU services, instead, he prefers to provide the high-cost product as PPU service and sell the low-cost product when the operating cost is low. In the nonintegrated case, when the operating cost is at a middle range, high-cost manufacturer prefers to choose the PPU model and low-cost manufacturer prefers to choose the selling model. Additionally, we extend the model in some perspectives, including the pooling efficacy and the characterization of customer usage.
