Ma Zhiming

Academician Ma Zhiming, a Mathematician and a researcher of Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was born in Chengdu, Sichuan province in January, 1948 while the Jiaocheng County in Shanxi Province was his native place of ancestral origin. He graduated from Chongqing Normal University in 1978 and completed his doctor’s degree in Institute of Applied Mathematics, CAS in 1984. Then he was elected Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences in 1995 and 1998 successively, and he became the Fellow of Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) in 2007.

He is mainly engaged in the work relevant to probability theory and stochastic calculus. After making great progress in research about corresponding relations between Dirichlet Form and Markov process, he had established the new framework of one-to-one correspondence between Quasi-Regular Dirichlet Forms and right continuous Markov process with others. The English monograph he and Rockner finished together has become a basic document in this area. As for Malliavin algorithm, he and other cooperators had proved that the capacity of Wiener space was irrelevant to the selected measurable norm. Besides, he had succeeded in many researches, including Singular Potential theory, Feynman Integral, Probability Interpretation of the Schrödinger equation, integral performance of random linear functional and nowhere Radon smooth measures. In recent years, he has been concentrating on the overlap between probability theory and other areas such as life, information, etc. He once made an inviting report on the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1994. The awards he had won include Max-Planck Research Award, the National Natural Science Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences (1st prize), the National Natural Science Award (2nd prize), Shiing Shen Chern Mathematics Award and Hua Loo-Keng Prize of Mathematics. In the past, he was the Chairman of the organizing committee for the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing (2002), member (2003-2006) and Vice Chairman (2007-2010) of the Executive Committee for International Mathematical Union, President of the 8th (2000-2003) and 10th (2008-2011) Council of the Chinese Mathematical Society as well as President (2011-2014) of Chinese Society of Probability and Statistics.
