The School of Journalism and Communication launched the theme activity of “Exploring the Industry and Empowering the Future” on April 26. Shen Haitao, Deputy General Manager of Tianjin People’s Publishing House gave a lecture on the theme of “Publishing Industry Today and Your Future Tomorrow”. The event was chaired by Li Hui, Deputy Secretary of CPC Committee and Vice Dean of the School.
Shen Haitao started with the development history of publishing. From bamboo slip to Gutenberg printing press, and from printing house to publishing house, publishing has accompanied the entire evolution of human civilization, and fostered the inheritance and development of human civilization.
Next, Shen provided a detailed introduction to the publishing process of books and the requirements for editing work by focusing on the “editing, printing and distribution” of books. He pointed out that an editor needs to know who are the target readers when planning a book, and also interacted with the students in the interesting game “salesman simulation”, making everyone realize the importance of understanding the needs of readers. When introducing book promotion, Shen emphasized that new media such as short videos shall be used for book sales and promotion today in order to expand the influence. In addition, regarding the future development of the publishing industry, Shen used the Young Pioneers’ Weekly as an example to introduce the operational transformation of traditional publications to the students.
Finally, Shen analyzed the career development prospects for the students from the perspectives of career, employment and entrepreneurship based on their current situation. He pointed out that in today’s rapidly changing era, students should look into the future, seize the opportunities of the times, and make career development plans as early as possible. He encouraged students to join the publishing industry, produce high-quality books with extensive knowledge and rigorous attitude, and contribute to the cultural inheritance and development.
The students exchanged views with Shen Haitao after the lecture on how to view the digital trend of the publishing industry and how to choose their employer from different types of publishing houses. The lecture provided the students with a more specific understanding of the development of the publishing industry and the content of editing work, and broadened their vision for career choices.
