I. School's Highlights
Exploration of new ideas for the construction of new liberal arts through mutual learning between literature and art, the intersection of literature and science, and the integration of literature and engineering. The School, guided by the national strategy of deep media integration and international communication, relies on the advantages of Nankai University as a comprehensive research university, and aims to implement the Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Education and Training Program 2.0. It is committed to playing a greater role in and providing more support for cultivating omnimedia talents in the new era, promoting media integration and development, and building a discourse system for external communication.
The School is a model in integration of academic community and industry, which records the most China News Awards won by its teachers across the nation. The School currently has 35 faculty members and 21 part-time professors. It not only presents a strong academic atmosphere, but also has close ties with the frontline news communication practice. The academic community and industry complement each other to jointly cultivate talents.
II. School Training
1. Personalized academic guidance
The School provides each student with a supervisor who is enthusiastic about undergraduate teaching, boasts rich teaching experience and has a strong academic background, and follows up the learning and provides guidance for students.
2. Abundant academic ability training
The School integrates high-quality resources from both internal and external sources, and conducts various forms of academic ability training based on course teaching and practical teaching, enabling students to widely participate in scientific research practice and obtain training on academic ability.
3. Solid professional ability practice
The School takes general education as the basics in line with national standards, and regards majors are the application. The proportion of course practice has been increased, and the focus of teaching has been shifted from theory to equal weight on theory and practice. Students should not only have basic abilities such as interviewing, writing, editing, and commenting, but also should master new abilities and skills such as omnimedia, big data, cross-border collaboration, social media, and operation and management. Such measures will effectively improve their professional literacy, expand their knowledge structure, and cultivate their innovation ability.
4. Multichannel academic exchanges at home and abroad
The School emphasizes the cultivation of foreign language skills, encourages and supports students to participate in academic exchange activities such as domestic and foreign academic conferences, and provides certain financial support. It organizes students to go to first-class universities at home and abroad for short-term exchanges at regular intervals, and gradually explores the establishment of joint training models with foreign universities.
III. Introduction to Majors
The School currently has three undergraduate majors: “Journalism”, “Network and New Media”, and “Editing and Publishing”. Through multiple guidance systems at the levels of the university, school, grade mentors, academic supervisors, peer mentors, and counselors, the School strengthens comprehensive guidance and training for students, guiding them in career self-planning and course selection. According to the course module design, students may independently choose the corresponding courses for learning based on personal interests, hobbies, and employment needs. Upon graduation, based on personal preferences, results of course studies and professional recognition requirements, specific professional directions will be identified as needed, and relevant degrees will be awarded to students, so as to cultivate versatile but urgently needed media talents in the era.
1. Journalism
This major focuses on nurturing advanced composite application talents in news theory and news business, who are capable of engaging in work related to news communication production and management, with a global perspective of versatile and all-around international news communication talents, engaging in and being competent in news interview, planning, editing, commenting, writing, management, investigation, photography, news release, public opinion analysis, and response work throughout the media process and undertaking important tasks in international news and communication, with a solid foundation for further education and research and teaching related to news communication.
2. Network and new media
This major is aimed to cultivate media creativity professionals required in the field of network and new media. It focuses on cultivating composite talents with solid basic knowledge, reasonable knowledge structure, first-class network and new media literacy, excellent network business skills, advanced new media communication concepts, and outstanding omnimedia capabilities. They can engage in and be competent in content production and dissemination as well as research and teaching work related to the network and new media in the era of integrated media.
3. Editing and publishing (direction of digital publishing and media integration)
This major focuses on cultivating editing and publishing backbone personnel and high-level theoretical researchers who have high literacy and are skillful in management, research and profession. At the same time, the major also attaches great importance to website editing, news client editing, social media editing, and digital publishing talent cultivation. Graduates can adapt to the development trend of digital publishing and media integration, engage in and be competent in various tasks such as planning, management, editing, interviewing, publishing, marketing, market research, and other editorial and publishing communication work in the editing and publishing industry.
