On Oct.21st,2022, a lecture titled "Academia as a Profession"- Determination, Planning, and Action for Law Students " was held both online and offline, with Dr. Sun Jingchao, a young faculty member of Nankai University Law School, as the keynote speaker and Professor Chen Bing, Vice Dean of Law school, presiding over the lecture.

Ms. Sun suggested that students should consider the external conditions, internal aspirations and job content, and carefully determine whether to include academic research in their career plans. Once you are determined to embark on the academic path, you should seize the key stage of the starting period to plan well. Ms. Sun emphasized that there are different emphasis among undergraduate, master's and doctoral studies. Students should continue to accumulate knowledge, expand their horizons, refine their skills, discover problems, and plan well for the "golden decade" of them, so that they can take the lead in the academic path and make achievements soon.

Ms. Sun suggested that students should read classical literature, attend academic lectures, and communicate effectively with tutors in order to "improve their academic taste and ability at the same time". The students are advised to improve their academic skills by reading systematically and training their academic language skills, so that they can inspire their academic potential.

When it refers to the personal experiences of Martha Nussbaum and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, two prominent and successful women in the "legal world," Ms. Sun said, "Because of the natural social division of labor between the sexes ,women who want to be successful need to bear the pressure from many aspects such as family and workplace. Female students should carefully gauge whether their academic passions are sufficient to provide the mental support to overcome the difficulties of reality, and be fully prepared psychologically before embarking on the academic path."

"Praying and waiting alone will left nothing for us, we need to act differently. We should deal correctly with the "demands of the moment", both in terms of human and vocation. It would be plain and simple if every man found the patron saint who holds the strings of his life and obeys them." This is Max Weber's wish and expectation for young researchers at the end of "Academia as a Profession", and Ms. Sun also takes this opportunity to encourage the students: "No matter what we do, we must do our work with our feet on the ground, grasp our own destiny, and strive to become the 'trendsetter of the times '."

As the concluding lecture of series of lectures on Entrance Education for New Students ,this one is an innovative "offline plus online" synchronous sharing mode. The lecture focused on such hot issues as "how to choose between academic and practice", "how to judge whether one has academic potential", "whether a female is suitable for doctoral study", etc. encountered by law students in their academic career planning, inviting young teachers to give tips and guidance to students from the perspective of both teachers and friends, and sharing the "methodology" that can be learned, which was widely recognized and praised by the attending students.
