On Oct.14th,2022, the lecture "Research Methods for Social Science" aimed for freshmen of Law School was successfully held. This lecture is one of a series of lectures on Entrance Education for New Students. The lecture was delivered by Professor Chen Bing.
At the beginning, Prof. Chen explained the word "Academic", he points that the word includes two parts, one is "think, imitate and innovate", the other part is skills and techniques. Engaging in academic research means the combination of theory and practice.
As for what is academic, Prof. Chen introduced to the students the flow of Chinese social science research from the initial policy-led, to the norm-led, to the gradual emphasis on problem-oriented, and finally to the multi-field integration. He elaborated that social science research starts from the world of objective systems, studies the principles and laws embodied in practice, and ultimately returns to the essence of objective guidance of practice.
Innovation is the source and goal of our research. At present, overall law-based governance enters a new era, which puts forward higher requirements for the innovation and development of jurisprudence research. We need to adhere to the political, scientific, practical, inclusive and innovative nature of research, bearing in mind that "only the innovator can make progress, only the innovator can be excellent, only the innovator can win".
As for how to make academic work, Prof. Chen started from two aspects: the directions and specific methods of social science research innovation.
The research direction mainly includes empirical research and normative research. In the process of writing the dissertation, Prof. Chen Bing advised the students to write less "cartwheel" words, to base on social practice, to combine real cases, to respond to major national needs, and to realize the value of linking theory to practice. Combining the academic papers published in the past, Prof. Chen Bing explained the specific innovation methods and essentials of topic innovation, content innovation, method innovation and conclusion innovation to students in detail.
Through academic training, students will produce various academic results such as academic reports, course papers, journal papers, dissertations, etc. He hoped that students will follow the rules of writing and publishing papers and choose suitable publications for their results.
At the end of the lecture, Prof. Chen wished that the new students would read some literature every day and accumulate to a certain extent to produce superimposed benefits. He hoped that the students would understand the literature thoroughly, summarize the laws, predict the hot spots, and make long-term efforts.
