Tianjin Key Laboratory of Urban Transport Emission Research is one of the main institutions specialized in traffic pollution prevention and control research in China. This is a neutral institute serving all levels of Chinese governments, all levels of ministries of communication and of environmental protection. As a multi-discipline research institution across transport, environmental protection and automotive technology, it aims at regional pollution source and status taking measures for mobile source pollution control. With the purpose of reducing traffic source emissions, reducing energy consumption, promoting the development of green transportation industry, improving urban air quality, and effectively guaranteeing citizens' life and health, the laboratory provides a research foundation for the construction of urban ecological civilization and sustainable development.

With mature talents as academic leaders, young and middle-aged researchers as business backbone, and master and doctor degree as effective strength, the laboratory has established a talent echelon of high-level interdisciplinary subjects. Its members include: 1 ‘State Council Special Allowance Expert’, 1 ‘Hundred Talent Program at Nankai University’ specializing in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental economy, environmental health, atmospheric physics, applied mathematics, information science, transportation engineering and meteorological science. There are 29 fixed researchers and 8 mobile researchers, including 21 with senior titles.

Research are mainly carried out by 6 areas including:Emission characterization technology of mobile source, Air quality observation and secondary transformation mechanism of mobile source, Model and simulation of mobile source on air quality, Impact of traffic pollution on human health, Emission and control of non-road mobile sources, Urban traffic pollution control and decision - making management. Based on actual road traffic flow observation, multi-source heterogeneous data fusion technology, GIS-T technology and traffic numerical simulation are used to realize the dynamic simulation of actual road network. The rotor test, on-board test and remote sensing test methods makes the vehicle emission accurate to obtain. Emission factors and source profiles of local fleets on actual roads are obtained by field observations, source apportionment models are used to analyze particulate matter and VOCs at different sites to obtain refined traffic sources. Coupling air quality models of different scales together with high-altitude resolution vehicular inventory and optimized chemical module, we can quantify the impact of mobile source emissions on air quality. Epidemiological and toxicological studies between traffic exposure and traffic air pollution are systematically evaluated.
