(1)Environmental Science
The major of Environmental Science at Nankai University was founded in 1973, and the Department of Environmental Science was established in 1983, which is the earliest Environmental Science Department in China. In 1986, it was granted the first batch of environmental chemistry doctor’s degree awarding right. In 2001, it was rated as a national key discipline and became one of the first four national key disciplines of environmental science in China. In more than 30 years, the department of environmental science has made full use of the multidisciplinary advantages of Nankai University. The faculties of chemistry, biology, physics, medicine, management and economics have been successively integrated, forming distinctive characteristic of the discipline. The teaching and scientific research in general ranks the international advance level. In 2020, environmental science at Nankai was selected as one of the first batch of national first-class undergraduate majors in the ‘Double ten thousand plan’ .
The department of environmental science has a strong teaching staff, 5 Outstanding Youth Fund Winners, 2 Famous Teachers of Tianjin, and 2 National Excellent Course Teaching Teams and a National Innovation and Intelligence Base, a Tianjin Municipal Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, a key laboratory of the Ministry of Environment and a key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, and three key laboratories of Tianjin.
The department of environmental science aims to cultivate the senior specialists with correct political direction and values, good scientific quality, systematic and comprehensive basic professional knowledge of environmental science, and the ability to analyze and solve problems, who have received training in scientific research, and can engage in scientific research, teaching and technical management in environmental science and environmental protection and related fields. The department of environmental science not only pays attention to the imparting of basic theoretical knowledge, but also attaches importance to the cultivation of students' innovative ability and experimental skills, as well as the connection with social needs. In addition to classroom teaching, students of department will also go deep into various fields related to environmental protection to carry outpractical work such as investigation, research and internships, and frequently communicate with famous universities at home and abroad, so as to build themselves into excellent environmental protection talents with solid knowledge foundation, broad vision and outstanding ability.
(2)Environmental Engineering
Environmental Engineering belongs to the national discipline of environmental science and engineering, with distinctive engineering characteristics. Through the teaching of engineering basic courses and rich practical teaching links, we are committed to cultivate independent planning, design, consulting, monitoring, evaluation, operation management and academic experts in the field of environmental pollution prevention (water, soil, gas, solid waste, etc.). The undergraduates were awarded in many international competitions. Graduates have entered universities, research institutes, design institutes, government departments, international companies, etc., and have been widely welcomed by employers.
Faculties have graduated from renowned colleges in and abroad, with 2 National Talents Program (including 1 academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering), and 2 leading talents in science and technology supported by Ten Thousands Talents. We have remarkable teaching environment, with four large-scale undergraduate teaching laboratories for drainage, water supply, atmosphere, and solid waste, national-level virtual simulation experimental teaching projects, and four on-campus internship training bases. The training base maintains close contact with world-renowned universities through activities such as undergraduate short-term overseas exchanges and regular academic lectures. In 2019, environmental engineering became the first major of Nankai University to pass the “Engineering Education Professional Certification” of the Ministry of Education. Graduates of this major were recognized by member organizations of the Washington Agreement.
(3)Resources Recycling Science and Engineering
The major of Resources Recycling Science and Engineering was established in 2010, and was graded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance as the Program with Distinctive Features at the National Level (the seventh Batch) in 2011. The Major aims to cultivate inter-disciplinary professionals those have good scientific literacy, systematic specialized knowledge and basic knowledge of engineering, through Basic training in scientific research. The graduate of this major are able to engaged in the works such as scientific research, planning and management, and design and construction in universities, institutes, governments and enterprises relating to resources reclamation, energy development and utilization, circular economy and low-carbon development.
There are multiple national and ministerial or provincial-level research platforms, including National & Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Biomass Resource Utilization, Institute of ecological civilization of Nankai University and Tianjin Biomass Solid Waste Reclamation Technology and Engineering Center, which provide good learning and practical opportunities for the students.
