The department was founded in 1984, and it is one of the earliest library and information science (LIS) programs founded in China. For almost thirty years, the LIS program has been one of the top LIS programs in China. The program offers Bachelor's and Master's degree in Library Science, Information Science, and Archival Science. It also offers doctoral degree in Library Science and Information Science. The faculty members are productive in research and enthusiastic in teaching. In the past three years, the faculty members published 154 research papers in academic research journals cited by Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI). According to Analysis of High Citation Index in Chinese Journals published in 2011, three authors are listed among 20 authors who were highly cited in LIS in China in 2010. Among the 20 authors, Professor Ping Ke is the author of the third rank, Professor Zhijin Wang is of the fourth rank, and Professor Liangzhi Yu is of the sixth rank.
